September 4 – 11 Paradise on the Vecht River

We are back for the 4th time our favorite spot on the beautiful Vecht River halfway between Breukelen and Maarssen Village – the place that we fondly call Nicolette’s Place. Taking time to smell the roses (literally red and yellow roses galor!) and watch the boats.

After admiring the Vecht River from the shores for more than 10 years, we finally got the chance to see the shoreline from the river.  Thanks to our wonderful hosts  Nicolette and Remko, we enjoyed a leisurely scenic ride up the lazy river to our favorite Thai restaurant in Breukelen with a bonus cruise to some extra sites farther north and some history lessons.  This is our 5th time at SameSame and every time has been memorable. Usually dining is indoors but this time the weather was perfect and they were serving outside on the riverfront so that made it extra special.

On the night of Sept 7 we were lucky to catch the lunar eclipse right outside our door over the Vecht river.  The eclipse coincided with the huge fall “corn moon” (that’s what the September moon is called when the October moon occurs closer to the autumnal equinox so it gets the title of Harvest Moon).

The weather has become quite cool, but only one day of rain. We’ve really enjoyed exploring this beautiful area, each day a different ride in a different direction. The highlight was the incredibly scenic circle ride along the lakes, with marinas and often with waterfront homes on both sides of the trail, then through deep woods to the charming secluded town of Lage Vuursche then returning through small towns along canals. Every ride had something special – along the lovely Vecht to Loenen aan de Vecht, past the island fort and through the polders to a tiny town for lunch and several other interesting rides. A relaxing and enjoyable way to wrap up our special summer.  We will definitely be back if the fates allow.
