Sept 6-7 Corso Zundert
Sept 5 through 8 Breda and Zundert Corso
We were happy to have a relief from wind and rain and to head south from the quirky farmhouse toward Breda. we arrived at 12:30 at our next stay around 12:30 and friends Frank and Michael arrived soon after – on time in spite of a canceled flight, rerouting to Minneapolis from Atlanta, bike rental, & train and other challenges. We went out for a nice lunch behind a church and then on to local Jumbo from groceries. Our stay has a lovely gas fireplace that was welcome on the chilly evening.
One the 6th we headed out early to be sure of secure bike parking in Zundert and then on to the festival. A gorgeous ride through deep forests. Orange was the color of the day so Frank was in style. The parade started late but was indescribable. We were happy to have front row seats. Story best told by pictures – I picked a few from hundreds to give an idea of the magnitude of the size, planning and effort involved in this annual production mostly volunteer effort over the last 90 years.
Today we got to visit the area where the floats are stored to inspect the internal workings of these amazing beasts… the best part for a bunch of old engineers and gardeners.
Each of us found something to be fascinated by when studying the floats. Michael was fascinated by the variety and volume of dahlias. Jim was fascinated by the mechanics of making all the moving parts operated just by human power. Frank was fascinated by the artist design of the floats. And I was fascinated by the powerful meaning of the messages that some of the floats portrayed.
