Lubeck! The original Common Market

Submitted by mag on Thu, 07/12/2018 - 15:28

Did you know there was a Common Market in Europe that lasted 600 years starting in the 1100s?  Neither did we! But we are learning all about the Hanseatic League here in Luebeck (sorry this keyboard has no umlaut) - the seat of the League controlling both the Baltic and North Seas all the way from Russia to London.   We had an idylic day exploring Luebeck.

The altstadt is an island surrounded by canals, and there are bike trails everywhere in concentric circles.  Cycling wasn't nearly as frantic as Groningen but there was still quite a bit of traffic so we mostly stuck to the outer rings.  Lubeck is very photogenic and we really binged on photos...   uploading is very slow here so stay tuned for more when I get a fast connection  - I just got to the main gate tonight!  We have a long drive to Copenhagen tomorrow.
