Danube River in Austria

Heading South from Haarlem

After a leisurely and enjoyable week in Haarlem, we headed our bikes south for a meandering route in the general direction of Hilversum.  With plenty of time and  not many miles to cover we were free to explore the area.  One truth was driven home...  touring cyclists can pedal for hours and cover many kilometers without ill effects. And following the ingenious knooppunt system through the amazing network of trails that run everywhere throughout Netherlands it's very easy to do this.   But take a wrong turn and get stuck for an hour in heavy traffic or lost in a maze of dead end streets and steep canal bridges - stopping, starting, dismounting, and turning around with a heavily laden bike and you will soon be totally exhausted and aching all over.  Luckily with good planning this only happened to us a few times and it was mostly smooth riding as we wound our way through the beautiful countryside to the south of Amsterdam.  Without much of a plan or schedule, we saw some beautiful scenery, enjoyed some great meals and stayed in some fascinating places.
