August 31 – September 4 Gorssel, NL

From Limberg Provence we headed straight back to our special place in Gorssel – the Postkantoortje – the historic Post Office that our hosts Pauka and Rinus have creatively converted to a beautiful B&B. This is one of if not THE best place we’ve ever stayed. Such a perfect little town and a perfect place… and our hosts spoiled us with way more than just greakfast!

Our hosts Pauka, Rinus and their son Thomas have traveled all over. They especially love Italy, carrying their folding e-bikes whereever they go. We go a demonostration and this has given us new ideas for future adventures. We also enjoyed lively conversations solving the worlds problems over wine in our little courtyard.

Gorssel is perfectly situated between 2 historic towns – Deventer and Zutphen, plus lots more charming little towns within biking distance. We also found our perfect pub, complete with a billiard table! It was there at lunch time but when we returned for an evening glass of wine… no billiard table! Jim asked about it and guess what…at dinner time it is lowered underground and the space converted to additional tables. Now we have to return to see it in action!

We enjoyed a lovely ride and a great lunch in the town of Lochem on the Twentekanaal.

We took another ride into Zutphen and I fianlly got to tour the “Chain Library” with its collection of 500 books that have been literally chained to these reading posts since the 1600’s. I used to complain the chair in my library carrel at Denver University was hard. Imagine being packed with other scholars for long days bent over these books… a steep price for knowledge!
