We had another lavish breakfast at Renate's and then took off toward Nijmegen... first stop the ferry across the Nederijn. the ferry was just pulling away from the dock when a red car came roaring up honking loudly - Renate bounced out waving Jim's yellow raincoat! What a heroic deed! Bravo Renate! From there we plodded south against rising strong winds through mostly urban areas until we reached the Rhine (Rhein in German, Waal in Dutch). The crossing across this massive body of water is via a trail attached to the side of the railroad tracks. this sounded a little scary especially with the high winds, but it actually turned out to be a piece of cake along a stable wide track with glass wind screen - a great "Rail with Trail" engineering feat we wish US railroads would allow.
